Applewood - The Charles Stewart Mott Estate

            Charles Stewart Mott was one of the co-founders of the General Motors Corporation and for many years a member of the Board of Directors and the largest shareholder.  In 1916 he established a "gentleman's farm" on 64 acres with walking distance of downtown Flint.   The estate consisted of the Mott family home with an attached greenhouse and large garage, a barn and chicken coop, a tea house on the extensive gardens and a gatehouse.
The name Applewood refers to the orchard of heirloom apple trees which is still productive, consisting of seventy one trees and 29 rare varieties.   For many years the farm supplied much of the food for the Mott family and the staff of the estate.  
Much of the acreage including the pasture was donated by Mr. Mott for the establishment of a community college and a campus for the University of Michigan.   Mott's generosity extended to the establishment of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, which continues to be a major contributor to environmental and social causes.  
Both Mr. Mott and his fourth wife Ruth lived to the age of 97 years and remained residents of the estate and Flint. 
Upon Ruth's passing in 1999 the estate was transferred to the Ruth Mott Foundation which undertook the task of restoring the home and opening the estate to the public in 2016.
