Snow, Ice, and Water - a photo on Flickriver

            North Pier Inner and Outer Lights in St. Joseph, Michigan

This pair of lighthouses on Lake Michigan are known as range lights. Two beacons paired up in this way help indicate to mariners that they are in a safe sailing range when the two beams are in alignment. And that's exactly what the North Pier Inner and Outer Lights did for maritime traffic around St. Joseph from the early 1900s until their decommissioning in 2008. Following this, the iconic structures didn't molder. Instead, a donation fund was established, and the lighthouses were restored to their original glory. Good thing too, as they are among the most picturesque lighthouses on the Great Lakes, whether on a clear summer day or surrounded dramatically in ice and frozen waves, as seen in this image,  come winter.
