46233 - CME - St Helens Central 27-7-2013

46233 Duchess of Sutherland leaving St Helens Central (formerly St Helens Shaw Street) with the Liverpool Lime Street to Carlisle Cumbrian Mountain Express.
This was a location that I hadn't visited for many years and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the forest that had grown and taken over the former goods yard and sidings.
Contrast this with Robert Catterson's shot taken in 1985 showing the rundown but still extensive layout, taken from the same bridge (Standish Street).

Beyond the extensive sidings, on the extreme left of Robert's picture were the goods lines that bypassed the station completely from Pocket Nook Junction, behind the photographer, to I think Ravenhead Junction, on the SH&RG line.
