New York Central S-Motor - a photo on Flickriver

Built in 1904 by ALCO-GE, the New York Central S-Motor (originally known as the T-Motor) was the first mass-produced mainline electric locomotive. NYC no. 100 (originally NYC&HR no. 6000) was the prototype for the S-1, S-2, and S-3 classes. It was renumbered as no. 100 in 1936.

These locomotives pulled passenger trains into Grand Central Terminal after legislation was passed banning steam locomotives within New York City limits. The advantages of their size, weight, and bi-polar configuration were striking for the NYC. Unfortunately, in 1907, two days into revenue service, a train led by two S-Motors fatally derailed on a curve. The outcome of this derailment was to convert the entire class to use a 2-axle pony truck rather than a single axle, thus guiding the 4-axle rigid wheelbase around curves better. At this point their designation was changed to S-Motor.

The S-Motors were replaced in 1913 with the larger T-Motors that could handle longer trains. For the next 60 years they were assigned to short commuter trains and empty equipment moves from Grand Central to the Mott Haven Coach Yards. The last S-Motor, no. 115, was retired from Conrail service in 1981.

Three S-Motors have been preserved, including no. 100, however it has been stored outside in upstate NY while awaiting funds for restoration and is in extremely poor condition.
