Lieutenant Henry Hodson Hooke, 45th Regiment of Foot, 1861 (Tinted CDV by Telfer, 194 Regent Street, London)

Henry Hodson Hooke was born circa 1842 in Kingstown, Dublin, Ireland, the son of Captain Bridges John Hooke (born circa 1801) and Frances Margaret Bourne (1809-1880). Captain Hooke, born in Scotland, was served with the 34th Regiment. In 1851, Henry Hooke was living with his parents and a brother in Dublin. On 13 August 1858, he was commissioned an ensign (second lieutenant?) in the 45th Regiment of Foot. (From wikipedia: The 45th Regiment of Foot was established in 1741. The 45th Regiment served for twenty years in Canada. The regiment also participated in the American Revolution, the Peninsular War, Burmese War, and the Kaffir War. It was later united with the 95th Regiment of Foot to form the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment.) In 1861, he was with the regiment in Farnborough, Hampshire. On 17 September 1861, he became a first lieutenant by purchase in the 45th Foot, and on 23 October 1867 became a captain by purchase. He served in the Abyssinian Campaign in 1868 (medal) and participated in the storming and capture at Magdala. He was married on 28 November 1868 to Laura Lucy Hone (1846-1905). Hooke became a major on 1 July 1881, and a lieutenant colonal on 21 July 1885. On 4 August 1885, he was given command of a battalion. On 21 July 1889, he became a full colonel. In 1891, he was living with his wife in Derby, Derbyshire, and was still a colonel in the 45th. After his retirment, Hooke lived at 17 Lansdowne Crescent, Kensington. Colonel Henry Hodson Hooke passed away on 19 December 1923 in Kinsington, Middlesex, leaving an estate of 11,298 pounds sterling.

(Don’t know if this is the same house, but a current listing of 17 Lansdowne Crescent included the following: A fine and imposing double fronted Victorian villa set back from the road and approached via a large forecourt suitable for three to four cars. In the same ownership for many years this unusually wide family house is planned over four floors and consists of just under 4, 200 square feet.
