Verso - CDV's by H.C. Milice & Brother

            Henry C. Milice was born May 1834 in Ohio, the son of John Milice (1801-1871) and Rebecca McKee (1811-1868); his father was a farmer and the couple would have seven children.  Henry married Mary A. Homan (1841-1904) on 9 October 1859, and they had two sons.  Henry moved with his parents to Wayne, Kosciusko County, Indiana circa 1847, and they were there for the 1850 census.  Circa 1856 he took up photography and in 1858 he had a studio called “Funk and Milice", which was located over Heller’s store; this studio had been an ambrotype gallery for Baker and Brothers.  In the 1860 census he was still in Wayne, working as a photographer, with his studio located at the southeast corner of the Public Square; in 1862 he was listed in the third floor over Heller’s Store.  In 1865, he paid $25.00 for a Class B license for Henry C. Milice & Brother; he renewed this license in 1866.  He was located at that time in the Empire Gallery in Empire hall, over Beckers & Rizer’s Fancy Store, P.O. Box 90.   In 1870, Henry, his wife, and two sons, were living in Warsaw, Indiana, where he was working as a photographer at Moon’s New Block over Heller’s Store; another CDV from about the same period has him at Moon’s New Block, Over Poe and Flower’s Drug Store, P.O. Box 90.  Later his gallery was in rooms opposite Morris’ Agricultural Depot.  He was still in Warsaw for the 1880 census.  In 1900 he was in Wayne, Indiana, working as a photographer.  He passed away on 25 December 1908 and was buried in Warsaw.   William C. Milice (1841 - 6 June 1907) was the brother that worked with Henry in his photography studio; however, by 1880 he was working as a butcher, and in 1900 was working as a carpenter.  Regarding the beginning of his career, one of his later cabinet cards has the 1856 date printed on it.   (This information came from versos, ancestry.com, and Joan E.
