Sampling the subsurface: 2 of 10 - a photo on Flickriver

            The large screw like piping is augering pipe. The screw like nature of the auger pipe transports material from the bottom of the hole to the ground surface. This eliminates the need for pressurized air or water. Augering is efficient at drilling a hole, but as scientist we want to know the properties of the rock exactly as it is in the subsurface—augering destroys this information. You will notice the augering pipes are hollow. They’re hollow because when we reach a depth where we want to sample, we stop augering and drop a smaller diameter pipe down the center and push a small open ended pipe with a plastic tube into the unaugered ground. This method allows us to fill a plastic sampling tube with rock before it’s disturbed by the auger. The smaller pipe we use to sample is shown on a small rack just behind the augering pipe. After we get our sample, we auger down through the sampled area and then repeat the process at a deeper depth. It’s slow going and a lot of work to remove all of the sampling pipe before we can continue augering but it’s worth it because we get a sample of the rock as close to undisturbed as possible.
