Aoraki Sunrise

The sunlight reflecting off the clouds above Aoraki Mt Cook does magic things to the surface of the lake and the foreshore ice!

For me, this sor tof moment really sums up why it's important to make time for your photography - from one night (which was rainy to start off, so absolutely no chance of a sunset) I have four images that I'm pretty happy with, all completely different styles of landscape. Of course I've got plenty of images that just don't float my boat, but the goal here is to have fun, and really appreciate how magic it is in these locations.

There was a couple of young backpackers trekked in for dawn with their cameras and tripods, and we have a great morning working on our different takes on the scene. I tend to limit my gear these days (I'm getting old, but I like to kid myself that I'm being deliberately selective for 'artistic reasons'... complete rubbish) so I only had my 24mm Tilt-shift and an astro lens (the sigma 20mm ART f/1.4). As we gazed around the valley there were so many beautiful pockets of light and spindrift around the high peaks to our left and right. Really magic stuff.. which my gear was utterly inadequate to capture it with. So I just had to sit back and enjoy the moment.. there's worse things in life than a cup of coffee and a stunning sunrise.
