Goosenecks II: It Just Never Ends - a photo on Flickriver

            The goosenecks of the San Juan River west of Mexican Hat, Utah.

The title of this photo refers not to the river or the mesas beyond, but to COVID.

I’m standing on a breezy clifftop here, the last place in the world where I need to be thinking about the pandemic, when a plush tour bus rolls up and disgorges a bunch of golden agers.

They all break off into clusters and seem more interested in talking among themselves than in the view. Moving around to get my photos, I hear little snippets:
“Tested positive.”
“Also sick.”
“Some more cancellations.”

Some of them talk about splitting off from the group, but how? They’re in the middle of nowhere!

Imagine what it’s like rolling through some of the greatest scenery in North America in that bus and hearing a cough a few rows back, or a sniffle somewhere up front. And this age cohort is going to be coughing and sniffling in the best of circumstances.

I avoided the news as much as I could on this road trip, but I did hear that some Utah hospitals were full to capacity around that time.
