Confederate defeats northwest of Nashville, Tennessee in February, 1862 made that city indefensible, and it was abandoned to the Union Army. In Union hands later that month, the city's location on the navigable Cumberland River, together with turnpike and rail connections, made Nashville a critical supply center for Union operations in the western theater of the American Civil War. Accordingly, The Union built a system of defensive works and fortifications to protect the city. Fort Negley, built on a hilltop, was the largest inland fort built in the United States during the Civil War, and a key position in the system. The fort consisted of a masonry star fort on its first level, surmounted on the second level by two masonry ravelins, triangular back-to-back gun positions. A wooden stockade above it all on the third level completed the work. The Confederate army returned in late 1864 to attempt to retake Nashville, but the battle was fought well south of the fort and it took no direct part in the battle. After the war, the fort fell into disrepair. At Fort Negley, about one mile (1.6 km) south of downtown Nashville, Tennessee, on June 21, 2021.
