BROUGHTON AND BRETTON..... - a photo on Flickriver

            BROUGHTON AND BRETTON: Taken from a brake van on a tour of local lines probably the 'Flintstone Tour' of 17-7-65 organised by the The Railway Enthusiasts' Club. [Don't know where the name comes from but it started and finished at Wrexham]. 
The station was opened on 14 August 1849 and completely closed on 4 May 1964 [see the notes below regarding passenger services!].
This was part of the Mold Railway Companies double track line from Saltney Ferry near Chester to Mold. 

When I was around 16 [1971] a geography project for 'O level' involved a village study of Higher Kinnerton which of course had to include the disused railway. A year later a friend and I ended up walking the line from Broughton to Penyffordd. At the end of our day I went to change films but the film snapped and nothing survived of that interesting walk.

When opened it was called Broughton but it was renamed by the LNWR in April 1861 to Broughton Hall. It received another name change on 1.7.1908 to Broughton and Bretton. The line was extended to Denbigh Junction on 12.9.1869 by the LNWR and it would become known as the Chester to Denbigh line. 

Broughton closed to regular passenger services on 28.4.1962 but it remained in use for a workmen's train service from Chester to serve the nearby aircraft factory [now Airbus but was originally Hawker Siddely] until 2.9.1963.
 The station building is now in use as veterinary practice and the eastbound platform waiting shelter is still extant though the platforms have disappeared. See the disused stations website for a range of photos.
