I did not expect to survive,
earth suppressing me. I didn't expect
to waken again, to feel
in damp earth my body
able to respond again, remembering
after so long how to open again
in the cold light
of earliest spring--

afraid, yes, but among you again
crying yes risk joy

in the raw wind of the new world.

Wisst ihr, was ich war, wie ich lebte? Ihr wisst,
was Verzweif lung ist; dann
werdet ihr verstehen, was Winter heißt.

Ich rechnete nicht damit zu überleben,
die Erde drückte mich nieder. Ich rechnete nicht damit,
wieder zu erwachen, in der feuchten Erde
zu fühlen, 
dass mein Körperwieder zu antworten vermag 
und sich nach so langer Zeitdaran erinnert, 
wie es ist, 
sich wieder zu öffnen
im kalten Lichtdes frühesten Frühlings –

scheu, ja, aber wieder unter euch

im rauen Wind der neuen Welt.
