HMS Gannet, Historic Dockyard, Chatham, Kent

            Built on the River Medway at Sheerness in 1878, the Gannet represents the heyday of the Victorian Navy and its world wide role in policing the waters of the British Empire. 

Between 1878 and 1895 she saw service in the Pacific, the Mediterranean, and the Red Sea, including action in 1886 defending the port of Suakin against rebel forces. In 1902 Gannet was converted into a drill ship for the Royal Naval Reserve and served as HMS President, the headquarters ship of the London Division RNR, until 1911.

In 1913 she was leant to the boys’ training sea training school, TS Mercury, on the River Hamble for use as a dormitory ship, a role which she played until the school closed in 1968.

It is now housed in No. 4 dry dock at the Historic Dockyard, Chatham, Kent.
