Long Day's End

            It was the fitting end to a great trip - Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Rocky Mountain National Parks.  We made a last minute decision to head up Trail Ridge Road to look for bighorns.  While we did not find any, the trip up was far from fruitless.  It was late afternoon and our first stop was to shoot pikas by the side of the road.  Surprisingly, no one stopped to see what we we looking at.  On our way back down I spied something out of the corner of my eye off in the distance along a ridge.  "There they are!" I triumphantly exclaimed to my wife, thinking I had spotted the elusive bighorns.  I turned the jeep around and parked at a pull-off.  To my surprise, it was not bighorns, but a bull elk and his harem, at 12,000 feet!  I got the 600mm out and shot away in exquisite light.  Again, no one stopped.  (I'll post a shot or two soon).

Since it was getting late and the sky had lots of promise, we decided to find a place for sunset.  We stopped at another pull-off which had a great view of Long's Peak.  I set up and waited.  Sure enough, the sky lit up nicely and the light marched up Long's Peak as the sun fell below the mountains.  Again, I was alone, which for Trail Ridge Road, is amazing.  Best viewed large.
