Torches take the stairs - a photo on Flickriver

            Each torch, weighing 50 kilos each, is carefully carried down the stairs through the forest to the "Nachi" waterfall. Here, the torches will be set alight by the participants of the Nachi-No-Ogi Matsuri. 

This is where the event reaches its climax and the fire ritual begins: each torchbearer will have to walk back and forth between the falls and the top of the path. Meanwhile, their comrades swallow and spit water onto the torches, trying to reduce the extreme heat of the flames. 

The ritual is just spectacular. I mean, would you imagine yourself running through the forest with a 50 kg torch on fire?
