Le ultime spinte in coda sul valico dei peloritani (Foto del Mese n. 142 – Febbraio 2022)

Questa Foto del Mese ci riporta indietro a più di 20 anni fa, agli ultimi mesi di esercizio della tratta di valico dei Monti Peloritani, chilometri finali della linea Palermo – Messina.
La foto ritrae due locomotive FS del gruppo E.656 “Caimano” nella stazione di Rometta Messinese. La prima è in testa ad un convoglio merci, con carri adibiti al trasporto di containers e casse mobili, appena giunto sul binario 3. Il secondo Caimano, eccezionalmente impiegato nel servizio di spinta in coda ed attrezzato con maglia sganciabile, si muoverà dal binario 1 per attestarsi in coda al convoglio da spingere sull’acclive tratta ferroviaria fino all’apice della linea (all’interno della galleria di valico) dopo aver superato le stazioni di Villafranca Tirrena - Saponara e Gesso.
Con l’attivazione, a novembre 2001, della nuova galleria di base (vedi articolo al seguente link www.a-f-s.it/20-anni-sotto-i-peloritani/) le spinte in coda con maglia sganciabile non sono più necessarie e di questo servizio rimangono i ricordi dei testimoni del tempo e qualche sbiadita fotografia nei cassetti.

The last pushing services the Peloritani pass (Photo of the Month n.142 - February 2022)
This Photo of the Month takes us back to more than 20 years ago, to the last months of operation of the rail section of the Peloritani mountain pass, the final kilometers of the Palermo - Messina line.
The photo shows two FS locomotives of the E.656 “Caimano” group in the Rometta Messinese station. The first is at the head of a freight convoy, with wagons used for the transport of containers, which has just arrived on track 3. The second “Caimano”, exceptionally used in the push service and equipped with a detachable hook (maglia sganciabile), will move from track 1 to the queue of the train to be pushed on the steep railway section up to the apex of the line (inside the pass tunnel) after passing the stations of Villafranca Tirrena - Saponara and Gesso.
With the activation, in November 2001, of the new base tunnel (see article at the following link www.afs.it/20-anni-sotto-i-peloritani/) the pushes in the queue with detachable hook (maglia sganciabile) are no more necessary and this particular service remain in the memories of the witnesses of the time and in some faded photographs in the drawers.
