Sly Stone started as a DJ on KSOL radio San Francisco - a station happy to mix songs by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones with the multiple directions typified by its base audience of Motown and Stax... - a radio station with a fascination for people and music that nourished a sly knowledge-base that, with experience, would generate song from as diverse influences as church choirs, psychedelic sound painting, African chant, Soul music and intimate story-song. Sly Stone had white people in the Family Stone because they could keep up with, and add to the chatting melodies that put funk into a soul train of dance; and because, like him, they were regular people with a passion. Sly and the Family Stone was a multiracial act that would be as important to the 60s and 70s as The Specials were to the 80s. The track featured on this lens test is from his last Family Stone record dated 1980 - already a distance from his 'prime' and not greatly received by press or public. Probably considered to be his worst record, the LP contains gems that simply prove how lucid and natural he was when delving inside a world of melody and rhythm. The influence of Sly Stone has been across the musical compass with Miles Davis, The Red Hot Chilly Peppers and Prince all subjects to his infectious good will. Within his band one name deserves an additional focus: the great Cynthia Robinson, arguably the best backing vocalist of all time - and trumpet player on too many classic songs and tracks to mention (I've added some links below). She was visibly the strong female musical force aside black and white musicians and the very Sly Stone.

In Sly Stone's project from the get go, Cynthia's input is everywhere on this live track. The legendary bass guitarist Larry Graham is also known as having invented a technique now known as 'slap base' from the Family Stone's sound (later used by Dylan on his 'Saved' sessions also around 1980).

The film is about the joy of pollination as a dance between flowers and insects. Bees and hoverflys in my garden of comfry beds. I went down a few times over the spring of last year testing several wider lenses - nothing extraordinary but including a Soligor and an Enna.
