William Cuffay's copy of Byron's Poems

William Cuffay was a black trade unionist and prominent Chartist. In 1848 he was accused of planning revolution, convicted of treason and transported to Tasmania. In Tasmanian penal colony he continued to fight for workers' rights, he died in the workhouse there in 1870.
William Cuffay was born in Chatham, Kent in 1788, his father was a freed slave from St Kitts. Chatham has more than enough public statues of Victorian imperialists why not a statue of one its own sons, a working class hero?
