Little Red Caboose - Lionel O Gauge Model Train

            This is a Lionel O Gauge Model Train little red caboose. This was one of favorite pieces. Mostly because was the last car in the train that came out of the tunnel. That's what cabooses do. 

In 1957 at age 5, I received my first Lionel Model Railroad train set.  If I remember correctly it was 4 or 5 cars and about 10 feet of track with a simple little speed controller. This was exciting.  It became my favorite entertainment over the next 7 years. My train set expanded and became permanent on a 4x8 plywood sheet on saw horses with wiring running under the plywood. The controllers became more sophisticated and could run multiple trains and accessories. I had plastic tunnels and little towns, but no fancy landscapes.  My Father built it when he was home from deployments.  He would be deployed for 8 or 9 months on aircraft carriers then home stationed on Base for 3 or 4 months.  This was good Father / Son time. So this still holds fold memories for me. 

In 1957 we had a grainy black & white TV that needed  a rabbit ear antenna to bring in the three broadcast stations. You had to get the rabbit ears just right or you couldn't pick up the station.  There wasn't much to watch and the stations were off the air from about 10:00PM(?) until 6:00AM(?). (IIRC)  My Dad won a color TV in 1960 or 1961 but there still wasn't much too watch.  

Watching a model train go around in circles at different speeds triggering different train accessories was actually more fun than watching TV.  This was our version of Video games.  My friends would come over.  We would play outside mostly, but sometimes we enjoyed playing with the trains and watching the smoke and hearing the whistle. 

I am going to contribute my model train set to the McCormick Stillman Railroad Park Model train club.  Maybe they can use some pieces and parts. Or at least they will know what has any value and where to give it to. This is why I decided to photo these for IRS documentation.
