A Night with the Elephants - a photo on Flickriver

            During my recent visit to Thailand, I spent a few days photographing the elephants and their ‘mahouts’ (caretakers) in Surin. A mahout is bound to an elephants for life. Surin is an ‘elephant’ village. Everything there is focused on the elephants and taking care of them. Surin is not a tourist town, unlike some places in the north. In Surin, elephants live with humans. They are raised as part of the family. There are about 200 mahouts in Surin and multiple projects supported by the government, raising awareness for better lives for elephants in Thailand, like The Surin Project.

In this photo we photographed an elephant with its mahout under this single tree in the village with the milkyway rising above at around 4 in the morning.
