            Boston & Albany D-1A class Suburban 4-6-6T steam locomotive 401 with a commuter passenger train departs the station at Brookline, Massachusetts, 9-2-1949.  These big boilered suburban steam locomotives built by ALCO in 1928 were usually found operating mostly between Boston and Riverside via the Highland Branch and the main line. They probably also ran to Framingham on a more or less regular basis too.  They were replaced by diesel locomotives during the late 1940's to early 1950's.  These five D-1A class steam locomotives were not all that small and were quite powerful plus they included a fixed tender.  Notice the interesting clothing sign on the building wall to the right.  To the left behind the station is a parked REA trailer.
