UNESCO designated the Taj Mahal a world heritage site in 1983 as 'the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally acclaimed masterpieces of the world's heritage'. Also described as the best example of Mughal architecture, 'the tear-drop on the cheek of time', it attracts about 8 million visitors each year.  Made of white marble inlaid with semi-precious stones.  The minarets lean outwards by a few degrees so that in case of earthquake they would fall away from the main tomb.  Materials were sourced from Tibet, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Arabia.  Shan Jahan was deposed by his son Aurangzeb who imprisoned him in the Agra Fort, from which he could see his beautiful creation.  After his death he was buried beside his wife in the crypt below the mausoleum.
