Quebec Postal History - 24 / 25 June 1907 - RUPERT, Quebec via NORTH WAKEFIELD, Quebec (split ring / broken circle cancel / postmark) to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Rupert is a village located about 10 kilometers NNW of Wakefield, Quebec, at the convergence of the Shouldice Road and Maple Drive.

On December 9, 1944, a fire destroyed the Rupert General Store. Here's the article from the Evening Citizen (now the Ottawa Citizen) on that date: "Fire Razes Home And Rupert General Store. WAKEFIELD, Dec, 9 -(Special)- Despite a determined effort by neighbors to extinguish the blaze, a fire of undetermined origin destroyed the general store and home of Wes Shouldice at Rupert, Que, about five o'clock this morning. No estimate of the damage could be obtained but the loss is said to be partly covered by insurance. The fire started in the store and quickly spread to the home next door. Immediately the blaze was noticed, residents formed a bucket brigade to combat the flames. None of the stock could be removed from the store but several household articles were taken from the burning home."

Rupert has an ice rink, community center, and a library. It is served by a United Church located in the village.

The village of Rupert is in the centre of the agricultural community established by Irish immigrants in the 1830s. In the past, it had a cheese factory, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, a general store, two churches (Methodist and Presbyterian), a community hall and a school.

It contains 2 churches (Pres. and Meth.), 2 stores, 1 cheese factory and 1 saw mill. The population in 1908 was 50.

I can't find any information on the Rupert Post Office - opening and closings etc...

ALCOVE (North Wakefield) - Alcove is a hamlet located along the shores of the Gatineau River, a few kilometres to the north of the village of Wakefield. As a result of its location, it was initially called North Wakefield. The name Alcove came into use starting in 1928 to designate the post office and was inspired by the local landscape. In fact, the village nestles in a hollow surrounded by hills. The first colonists to settle in the area in 1834 were the parents of Mary Pritchard-Irwin, the wife of Wakefield’s pioneer, Joseph. They settled directly on the shore of the river. Other people followed them and progressively settled the interior areas. By about 1900, the village had a church, a store, a school and a crossing, evidence of its vitality.

(Maniwaki branch), 24 miles north of Hull (opposite Ottawa City), it has 1 Methodist church, 1 general store, 1 hotel, 1 butter factory, 1 express and 2 telegraph offices. The population in 1908 was 100.

The Post Office at North Wakefield was established - 1 May 1859 - it changed name to Alcove - 1 May 1928.
