SS Fabian & Sebastian, Woodbastwick - a photo on Flickriver

A refreshingly unusual dedication, St Fabian & St Sebastian at Woodbastwick is also a surprise in this area full of well preserved medieval survivals in being largely renewed in the Victorian period. The great architect George Gilbert Scott largely rebuilt the church, following the original footprint and adding a new upper stage to the tower., a lavish sum was spent, but the result is harmonious at least.

The interior is somewhat dark (even on the bright morning of my visit) owing to a full set of Victorian stained glass windows, another surprise in an area where churches have generally remained largely clear-glazed since the 17th century (often with large windows giving well lit interiors). The glass is the work of two major studios, the chancel windows being by Clayton & Bell whilst those in the nave are the work of Lavers & Westlake. The windows are rich in imagery, if a little overpowering, subduing the light as they do.

I was pleased to find this church open and welcoming around 9am (having just made the detour here after finding a better known neighbouring church still hadn't opened up).
