St Edward's, Kempley - a photo on Flickriver

Kempley's second church is dedicated to St Edward the Confessor and was built in 1903-4 in the heart of the village, initially to serve as a chapel of ease but since the ancient and more remote church of St Mary was declared redundant in 1975 it has been the active parish church of Kempley.

The building is an adventurous example of Arts & Crafts architecture designed by Randall Wells and is delightfully unorthodox in form, distinguished by a saddle-backed tower which acts as the porch on the north side and low eaves which mean much of the building is composed of the pitched roof resting on low walls. There is no east window (a relief of the Crucifixion takes its place outside) but a remarkable lattice window composed entirely of lozenges filling most of the west wall to serve as the principal light source.

The interior has a prayerful simplicity and is dominated by the roof rafters that almost seem to enfold the congregation. Most of the light comes from the west window which like the remainder here is plain glazed. It is all of a piece Arts & Crafts, with little in the way of ornamentation but an atmosphere of much charm.

I found the church open and welcoming. I didn't linger long here but found it refreshingly different. I'm not sure whether the churchwarden's appearance as I prepared to leave was coincidence or if my presence had been noted with any suspicion, we only spoke very briefly as I was behind schedule and needed to make a move.
