The Orthodox church of The Ascension was established in the surviving chapel (formerly one of a pair) at Clifton Road Cemetery and has happily given the building new life and a future.

Built in 1863 to the designs of George Bidlake, the chapel is a compact rectangular building with a porch and attractive spirelet at the north west corner. The companion chapel formerly stood some distance to the east and followed the same overall template except it had a much smaller, rather mean spirelet (more of a pinnacle) perched atop four red-sandstone colonnettes (instead of the eight at the surviving chapel). It was demolished in the early 1990s and its site is now an area full of shrubs.

The interior was always very austere with whitened walls and clear-glazed windows, but since its recent conversion to Orthodox use it is full of life and colour, the small space divided by two screens, an open one at the west end to create a small narthex and the iconostasis to the east, all enlivened with a rich display of icons (by Aidan Hart). There isn't much space here for the worshippers, but the lack of seating keeps it a little more flexible for larger volumes of people.

I've known this building as a local landmark most of my life and was saddened by the loss of the other chapel, but delighted the Orthodox community were able to save this one (always the more attractive of the two) and give it new use. It is not normally open outside of Sunday services so I came here on a Heritage week in September to see inside for the first time and was greeted by a very pleasant couple of parishoners who made me very welcome.
