Shixuoka est à trente miles au sud-ouest de
Fujiyama et l'excellence de son thé-
jardins sont attribués en partie à l'abri
ter que la grande montagne offre
contre le vent du nord. Le thé pro
duit dans ce quartier se classe deuxième seulement
à celui d'Uji.
Cette vue est un bon exemple de la
supériorité du stéréogramme sur la
photographie ordinaire. La façon dont la fille
se démarque de sorte que nous semblons presque
regarder autour d'elle, conduirait un peintre à
désespoir. La caméra binoculaire avec
dont cette photo a été prise semble
améliorer la vision naturelle.

A Country Girl of Old Japan, Shizuoka
Shixuoka is thirty miles southwest of
Fujiyama, and the excellence of its tea-
gardens is attributed in part to the shel-
ter which the great mountain affords
against the north wind. The tea pro-
duced in this district ranks second only
to that of Uji.
This view is a good example of the su-
periority of the stereograph over the
ordinary photograph. The way the girl
stands out, so that we seem almost to
look around her, would drive a painter to
despair. The binocular camera with
which this picture was taken seems al-
most to improve upon natural vision.
The girl is in nc> hurry. She must
have joined the Don't Worry. Club, and
her ancestors before her for a thousand
years. XXXXXXXThe peasants of Japan are eman-
cipated serfs, and many of them are as
care-free as our colored people in the
South.XXXXXXX
"As to soil, a moist sand loam, on the
lower slopes of hills, is the best bottom
for a tea-plantation. Rain flows off easily
from gently inclined ground of this sort
without carrying away good earth.
There are no tea-gardens on the sides of
steep mountains, and only exceptionally
do we find terrace-culture for gardens of
