SAMSUN - Black Sea Coast Motorway - a photo on Flickriver

            Samsun is located in northern Turkey, on the Black Sea coast. In 2007 it counted 725,111 inhabitants, being one of Turkey’s major cities 2007. It is the capital city of Samsun Province and an important sea port. Samsun was founded as the colony Amisos  by settlers from Miletus in the 7th century BC. In the 3rd century BC, Samsun came under the rule of the Kingdom of Pontus and part of the empire of Alexander the Great. The Romans took over the city in 47 BC, and were replaced by the Byzantines after the fall of Rome. In 1200 Samsun was captured by the Seljuks, to be later taken over by the İlhanlılar. Samsun was incorporated into the network of Genoese trading posts and was taken by the Ottomans in the beginning of the 15th century. Before leaving, the Genoese razed the town. Atatürk founded the National Movement for the Turkish Republic at Samsun  (Information from WIKIPEDIA).

Samsun este situat în nordul Turciei, pe ţărmul Mării Negre. In 2007 avea 725,111 locuitori, fiind unul din oraşele mari ale Turciei. Este capitala provinciei cu acelaşi nume şi un important port la mare. Oraşul a fost fondat de colonişti din Milet în secolul 7 î.Ch. In secolul 3 î.Ch. a intrat sub stăpânirea Regatului Pontic, parte a imperiului lui Alexandru cel Mare. Romanii au ocupat oraşul în anul 47 î.Ch. iar bizantinii le-au luat locul după căderea Romei. In 1200 Samsun a fost capturat de selgiucizi, pentru ca ulterior să intre sub dominaţia ilhanizilor. Mai târziu, Samsun a fost încorporat în reţeaua genoveză comercială genoveză. La începutul secolului 15 a fost cucerit de otomani. Inainte de a părăsi oraşul, genovezii l-au distrus în întregime. Din Samsun a pornit Atatürk mişcarea naţională care s-a soldat cu întemeierea Republicii Turcia (Sursa de informaţii: WIKIPEDIA).
