Botezul Domnului este cunoscut în popor sub denumirea de Boboteazǎ. Botezul Mântuitorului în Iordan de catre Sfântul Ioan Botezǎtorul poartǎ şi denumirea de "Epifania" sau "Teofania", termeni care provin din limba greacǎ şi înseamnǎ "arǎtare", "descoperire". Atunci cand Ioan a acceptat sǎ-L boteze pe Mântuitorul, Hristos S-a descoperit lumii ca Fiu al lui Dumnezeu: cerurile s-au deschis, Duhul Sfant S-a coborât în chip de porumbel peste El, iar Tatǎl a mǎrturisit: "Acesta este Fiul Meu cel iubit, întru Care am binevoit!" (Matei 3, 17). Sfântul Ioan Gura de Aur spune în acest sens, cǎ Hristos "n-a ajuns cunoscut tuturor când S-a nǎscut, ci când S-a botezat".

Epiphany (Koine Greek: ἐπιφάνεια, epiphaneia, "manifestation", "striking appearance") or Theophany (Ancient Greek (ἡ) Θεοφάνεια, Τheophaneia meaning "vision of God"), which traditionally falls on January 6, is a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God the Son as a human being in Jesus Christ. Western Christians commemorate principally (but not solely) the visitation of the Biblical Magi to the Baby Jesus, and thus Jesus' physical manifestation to the Gentiles. Eastern Christians commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God.
