Emil Talamini Real Estate - a photo on Flickriver

It's hard to keep up my goal of a picture a day lately, because I'm temporarily back to my Apple Cube, while waiting to buy a faster computer. I have to scan some more pola's too!

I like this photo because of the sign on the wall--if you've been following me for a while, you know I'm a sucker for "living history", especially in cities.

This part is particularly interesting: Algonquin 4-1817. Turns out it's a phone number: I had no idea phone exchanges used to have names and they were used like that.

New York City, like most of the country, was divided into a variety of these, and they could say as much about you as your accent, which believe me said plenty. ORegon was, well, the wilderness. BUtterfield 8, by contrast, was the much tonier telecommunications precinct immortalized by John O'Hara and later Elizabeth Taylor. MUrray Hill was pretty good too, although there was one of these in New Jersey as well.
