The Shard and the City from Stave Hill

This is the view of The Shard and the City of London looking west-north-west along Dock Hill Avenue in Rotherhithe, in south east London, from the top of Stave Hill, an artificial hill 30 feet (9 metres) high, which was created in 1985 by the London Docklands Development Corporation, during the development of Surrey Quays on the site of the former Rotherhithe docks -- and, specifically, Stave Dock. It was created using spoil (waste material and rubble) from the infilling of the docks, and is part of Russia Dock Woodland, a beautiful 35-acre area of woodland, parks and lakes, created from the former Russia Dock, which was originally used to import timber. The hill is surrounded by Stave Hill Ecological Park, which is five acres in size. Photo taken just before 12.30 am on the morning of January 2, 2013.
