Chesil Cove and the sea wall - a photo on Flickriver

On the Isle of Portland, in Dorset, at the eastern end of Chesil Beach, a shingle beach (technically a barrier beach), 18 miles long (29km), 660 feet wide (200m) and 50 feet (15m) high, this is Chesil Cove and the sea wall that protects the village of Chiswell from the fury of the sea. Chesil Cove was the site of numerous shipwrecks over many centuries (up to and including the 20th century), and was also susceptible to horrendous floods. The sea wall was built between 1958 and 1965, and was then reinforced in the 1980s after floods in the 1970s. There was further flooding in December 1989 and January 1990, but in general the reinforced sea wall has provided protection of the sort that was never previously available. The most prominent building in the middle of the photo is the Cove House Inn, a welcoming pub that used to be regularly flooded. Photo taken on April 9, 2013, during a four-day family holiday in Chiswell.
