The Verne Citadel - a photo on Flickriver

The Verne Citadel

At the highest point on the Isle of Portland, in Dorset, the Verne Citadel, seen here, is a haunting sight on a foggy evening. Surrounded by high cliffs and a moat, it has just two entrances, one via the footbridge in this photo, and another via a tunnel. Originally built in 1847 for prisoners building the Portland Breakwater, it was then used by the military as a barracks, but became a prison again -- The Verne Prison -- in 1949. Despite its formidable appearance, which had us expecting that Dementors would be flying around at any moment, when we visited it in the fog at the blue hour on the evening of April 9, 2013, it is not a maximum-security facility at all, and is, in fact, a Category C men's prison. As its website explains, "The population consists of life sentence prisoners and determinate sentenced prisoners, many serving four years or over. About sixty per cent of the prisoners are foreign nationals; over fifty different nationalities [are] represented."
