Dirty Devil Milky Way - a photo on Flickriver

            I've been dipping my toes back into night photography recently as I've been inspired by the Desert Southwest. I knew the Milky Way would emerge around 4 AM so I woke up at 3 AM and scouted several compositions near my campsite overlooking a large canyon and river.

I found this curving canyon wall quite inviting and it lined up perfectly with the night sky. The wide angle here does not really do the canyon's size justice as the river was a good 500 feet below me.

It was quite peaceful resting on this perch witnessing the stars above in the cool hours of the early morning - I could hear the sound of a nearby owl hunting for mice, which was quite incredible as well.

For this particular photograph, I first exposed for the ground for a whopping 632 seconds at ISO 1600. Right afterwards, I exposed for the night sky at ISO 10,000 for 20 seconds. I tried to do some stacking for noise reduction, but the clouds were moving quite rapidly through the scene, so pardon the noise
