Getting To Know You - a photo on Flickriver

            The pairing off of the ducks and geese is really very noticeable this time of year. These two mallards were having a quiet moment together when I spotted them deep in branches near the water. How rude of me! But I backed off and let them be. Mallards are seasonably monogamous, and then they go their separate ways. They are also heavily skewed towards males, so there is a lot of competition for the females' attention. 

I'd like to think there will be baby duckings to photograph a month or so from now, but the NYC Parks Dept. goes around and removes or addles the eggs to control the delicate ecology of the lake. Even the swans did not escape this forced birth control last year. I haven't seen a baby cygnet or ducking in any of the NYC local ponds or lakes in a few years. Surely some must escape.
