Kirk's Dik-dik - a photo on Flickriver

Kirk's Dik-dik

             Growing to just 40 cm high at the shoulder, these shy creatures are the smallest species of the antelope in the world.

Look closely at their odd, elongated nose. You may think this is an adaptation for an improved sense of smell, but it actually helps keep cool in the hot, arid environments in which they live. When they need to cool down, dik-dik's will pant through their nose, the increased air flow helps to reduce the temperature of the blood that is flowing there.
