            All around the flanks of the mountain there are similar cement barriers to catch the falling debris. Eventually they fill up and have to be excavated. This one has drain holes near the base, but water is flowing over the top since the debris catching space is full of sand, gravel, trees and branches from past years. Before the advent of concrete in Japan in the 1870s and 1880s, perhaps there were few such barriers built of stone or wood. But now these constructions cover the mountainous islands of Japan, helping to stabilize the seismic shaking and vulcanism, the typhoon damage from wind and rain, and the hazard of avalanche during and following the winter season.
