steadfast stone figure greets summit hikers up & down

            The name of the donor carved at the base of the statue is one typical of the pre-WWII decades, or perhaps dating back to the Edo period: (reading from right to left on the base of the stonework, ending with the 3 characters for a man... U+E+Mon). So while the carving and placement are probably 3 or 4 generations old, or more, the bright red fabric covering on top is only a year or two old, perhaps. Somebody feeling responsible, interested, or otherwise motivated has refreshed this covering.

It would be interesting to know more about religiosity for people of the time when this was created in general, as well as the personal religiosity of those making the project come into final form. But it would be equally interesting to ask the same general and personal questions now of 2017. What is the combination of internal and external (obligation, peer awareness, parental or other expectations, and so on) motivations, for instance? Can such patterns be seen similarly in urban, suburban, and rural settings around the many regions of Japan, or does each location show distinct patterns of religious engagement with the physical terrain of today & legacies of historical consciousness, I wonder.
