Lock 'em up? Reformatory generations ago

A group of five incarceration sites is clustered to the west of the Ionia County's county seat, Ionia. This one may be the oldest, judging from the architecture shape and materials. The road that skirts the Michigan Reformatory, Wall Street (?20 feet high brick wall), shows several farm buildings nearby, across the street. So there was probably a time when the Reformatory was structured so that able-bodied men would produce their own food, prepare it, and take care of the facilities that allowed them to live at low expense, while also learning some practical skills and exercising in the outdoors, apart from the winter months; or maybe they chopped wood (if trust with axes or saws was extended).

Probably archaeologists have found functionally similar structures to punish or to reform (or both) their own rule-breakers. And turning from past to future, probably there, too, some sort of organized system of incarceration will be designed to curtail the freedoms enjoyed by law abiders.
