Strong winds blow plastic onto the Grand River

            Researchers were surprised to find so many plastic drinking straws in the mass of the North Pacific Gyre, a mass of swirling plastic waste the size of Texas in the ocean. One reason is the discarded straws are easily dropped, fall between the cracks, are moved by wind and water, and are durable. Part of the path from parking lot to mid-ocean is rivers like this one.

The fallen riverbank tree samples a swath of this section of the Grand River at the Ottawa county park, Grand Ravines. Other waste is pushed along the river bottom or semi-submerged in its flow downriver. Until the "litterbug" and "give a hoot; don't pollute" public service campaigns of the 1970s there was probably a lot of waste thrown overboard, or blowing from litter sites into the waterways. But in 2021 a majority of the public is in the habit of putting waste into receptacles, if provided, or bagged up and abandoned other times. Then animals tear the bags open and wind and weather set the plastic free.
