New shrine, old shrine, ancient shrine

            Between the road at the north outskirts of Yamanashi city and the grove of peach trees is this sign for Fire Cistern (underground stockpile of water for extinguishing fires) on the right and a red-painted torii to mark shrine ground beyond. In this case the stone foundation has several worship spots. The one on the right looks like it was installed only yesterday. Next to the left is one missing a platform that could be 50 or 150 years old. In the center but unreadable from this distance and obscured by lichen growing on the surface seems to be a dedication of naming of the kami (plural or singular) to pay respects to here. The stone lantern is probably decorative, not a source of lighting. Finally at the left end is a gathering of rounded stones that uniquely to this wide valley are regarded as possible sites that kami may sometimes inhabit. Thus, rather than bury, crush, put into a wall, or otherwise put to construction use, these can be seen alone or in groups like this as a suitable point to direct one's expression of respect.
