Castillo de Santiago y desembocadura del Guadalquivir

            This fortress was built in the late Middle Ages between 1468 and 1492, by the II Duke of Medina Sidonia, Mr. Enrique Pérez de Guzmán y Fonseca, the magnificent, natural son of Don Juan Alonso Perez de Guzmán I Duke of Medina Sidonia and Isabel of Fonseca and Ulloa.
Although it is striking, the castle was not designed for the control of the mouth of the Guadalquivir, or for the war against the Nasrid that were at the end of the Granada War. The real reasons for its construction were no others that the aristocratic struggle and very characteristic power symbol and as caution against a possible monarchical intervention in the conflict with Ponce de León.

From its construction to 1645 the castle worked as a Ducal strength, illustrious characters such as Isabel la Católic Hiring House »established by the Catholic Monarchs for the control of Naos, their cargoes and passages to and from the New World.
