Emily Davison and Votes For Women, 1993 badge

On 4 June 1913, 40-year old Emily Davison – a militant suffragette and advocate for votes for women in the United Kingdom – took the dramatic step out onto the Epsom Derby racecourse to pin a suffragette flag on King George V’s horse. As she reached up to the reins of ‘Anmer’ she was hit by the animal, which would have been travelling at around 35 miles (56 kilometres) per hour, and flung to the ground alongside the horse and rider. Among the crowd of bystanders who had rushed onto the track, Emily never regained consciousness. She died in London two days later.

The contemporary news media were largely unsympathetic to Davison, but she quickly became a martyr for the suffrage movement. At her funeral on 14 June, five thousand women, followed by hundreds of male supporters, marched in ranks wearing the suffragette colours of white and purple. 50,000 people lined the streets. Her death marked a culmination and a turning point of the militant suffragette campaign, and five years later, partial suffrage for women was achieved in the UK. Davison’s legacy lives on in various plaques, statues, libraries, and popular culture.

On 4 June 1919, six years later to the day, the U.S. Congress also approved the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which guaranteed suffrage to women.

This badge comes from the 1993 Suffrage Centennial Year Trust Project Files, and was created for an exhibition held at the London Museum on London Suffragettes (see the poster for the exhibition here: www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/40652953540). It depicts the slogan of the suffrage movement for which women like Davison struggled. Davison was born in London, studied there, and took part in many direct actions in the city. London was also where her funeral was held.
