Harrisburg, PA Pennsylvania State Capitol - George Grey Barnard sculptures - Love and Labor: The Unbroken Law

            George Grey Barnard created two large sets of sculpture for the west entrance to the Pennsylvania State Capitol that were dedicated in 1911. The south set is titled The Burden of Life: The Broken Law and the north group is titled Love and Labor: The Unbroken Law. They were executed in plaster and transformed into Carrara marble by Piccirilli Brothers. Barnard created 27 of the 30 figures as nudes which was not well received and plaster of Paris trousers were put on all of the nudes at first and then those were replaced with marble sheaths on all of the male figures. Barnad stated, "There has been some criticism, because these 30 figures I have executed are nude. Only in the nude could I have given adequate expression to these figures. Drapery would have spoiled the effect. Only through delineation of the nude human form can great emotions be shown. You cannot drape a symbolic figure in an overcoat and expect it to be anything but a marble dummy." The Pennsylvania State Capitol complex is on the National Register of Historic Places #13000287, and also a National Historic Landmark.
