Jupiter - 2021-10-21 00:32-02:07 - Animation

This animation of Jupiter contains its moons Io and Callisto, Io's shadow, and Jupiter's Great Red Spot. The sequence begins with Io on the Jovian equator near the center of the disk. It may be hard to identify at first, but it becomes more distinct as it "flies" off of the right limb near the end. Io's shadow falls on to the disk at the equator early in the sequence.

Callisto is the prominent dark circle that can be seen south of the Jovian equator at the beginning of the sequence. Being at a greater orbital distance from Jupiter, it moves across Jupiter's disk noticeably more slowly than Io.

Coming into view at nearly the same time as Io's shadow is the Great Red Spot.
