Celan House - Dionisio González at Málaga's CAC

Prominently displayed here is a model of Marcel Breuer's Celan house, it's an element of the Dionisio González exhibition in Malaga's Centro de Arte Contemporáneo (CAC), a former wholesale market converted to a contemporary art museum like the R'dam KunstHal - it has no own collection.

It is part of the “Construir, habitar, existimar = Building, Dwelling, Holding an Opinion Installation.“ It’s a group of photographs, documents, models and holograms that focus on the history of two mid-century residential structures, Celan House and Madeleine House, designed by Marcel Breuer and Erich Mendelsohn, respectively.

Celan House, initially designed by Marcel Breuer for the poet Paul Celan in Plaisir (Île-de-France), was finally built by the architect in 1954 in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, as a private residence. Ignoring contemporary trends, this space was designed according to what Simmel called the Stimmung or spiritual mood of the landscape, based on the psychic and reflexive state of the observer or on the actual subconscious of the things that determine the order of the landscape. Celan House is undoubtedly Breuer’s most singular creation and one of the most paradoxical constructions of the Modern Movement in architecture. The fact that it subsequently collapsed and was demolished, that this order succumbed to absence (on 18 April 1970), makes this house an almost elusive entity. When Celan visited Breuer in Wellfleet at the house bearing his name in 1958, four years after its completion, he exclaimed, “This is where the association of the world’s outcasts should be founded.” Source: here.
