The return of the hand

Europe, Belgium, Flanders, Vlaanderen, Antwerpen, Antwerpen Centraal station (Middenstatie), Peaceful hand , Shufen Yan (cut from all sides).

Cities have often names that link them to their geographic past. Rotterdam means ‘dam in the (river) Rotte’. The name Antwerpen once was based on ‘hand-werpen’ (the throwing of a hand) - the founding story - it’s about Brabo and Druon Antigoon. Legend has it that in centuries past Antwerp was terrorized by a giant, Druon Antigoon, who forced ships to pay tolls before they were allowed to cross the Schelde. If refused, Antigoon chopped off one of their hands and threw it into the river. When the Roman legionary Silvius Brabo (namesake of Brabant) wanted to cross the Schelde and encountered Antigoon, a conflict arose, Brabo killed Antigoon and, reversing roles, chopped off his hand and threw it into the river.

Placed in Antwerp Central Station (‘de Middenstatie’) this giant hand is, of course, a referral to the city’s name and foundation story. But the official story is that the artist expressed ‘her love for harmony in the metropolis of Antwerp’. She is sculptress Shufen Yan, a Flemish of Chinese descent and a graduate from the Royal Academy of Antwerp.

The statue (2012) is called the ‘Vreedzame hand’ (Peaceful hand). It’s made off stainless steel. It’s size : 2.5 x 1,2 x 1,4 meters. Three craftsmen planed and polished the stainless steel intensively to get it so highly reflective as it is now. The distorted reflections of the station's grand shed must be a challenge for 'palm line readers' ;-)
