Malva Sylvestris (Zebrini) - a photo on Flickriver

            Malva sylvestris, known as common mallow or zebra hollyhock (although it is not a true hollyhock, but it is a relative), growing in the park behind my building. 

The park has a few raised beds with concrete walls. They're full of dry, hard clay and rarely, if ever, watered. Nonetheless, these  -- along with cosmos and daylily -- all seem to thrive in them. Someone planted them a few years and they reseed themselves annually. They're cheerful and a nice break for the eyes from all the grey.

I guess, in other contexts, this plant would be considered a weed.
