Churches in Beverly, MA - a photo on Flickriver

On the way to take some photos in Gloucester and Rockport, MA one of the small towns I drove through was Beverly, which is north of Salem. I'd photographed Salem the evening before, and I'd never heard of Beverly.

As soon as saw the steeple of the First Baptist Church, I wanted to stop. When the yellow Unitarian Universalist Church came into view, I knew I had to stop. Up the street a bit was a red brick Catholic Church. I love church architecture, and so I parked and spent some time here.

The Baptist Church, on the right, was originally built in 1801. The steeple is 133 feet tall, and the light shone 15 miles out into the harbor, guiding ships to port. The church burned down in 1975 but the steeple was saved, and incorporated into a new church.

The yellow Unitarian Universalist Church was the first parish church in Beverly, established by John Hale in 1667. (New England dates always amaze me) The very first Sunday School in New England was established at the church.
