Golden Sunrise at Spanish Pier - a photo on Flickriver

Anyone can aim a camera at a really "artistic" sunrise and if they get the horizon line straight, can be applauded for their "perfect capture."

Only a really dedicated photographer will get as close to surging tides as I do to get something which looks a little more special. You've seen the "Spanish Pier" in many of my photos except usually I'm standing on top of it. The Cabrillo Fishing Pier can be seen in the distance on the horizon near the center of the photo. Here I use the Spanish Pier as if it's a large rock wall looming to the right. The water is almost frozen around the sharply detailed rockscape on the sand. The sun hasn't even risen yet!

This isn't a "snapshot". In fact, it's a highly processed HDR 6 image focus stack, with all the focusing in the actual image done manually with the erase tool in Photoshop. I don't trust any algorithms or "AI" to give me the image I want to see. I've selectively monitored and dialed the HDR up or down to give a slippery almost 3D look to the rocks in the foreground. I've often said it can take an hour to process one of my images. I set a timer. This took 55 minutes.

I'm actually pretty proud of this image, and it'll surely make the cut for "Best of 2024."
